We have been responsible for publishing 9.4% of all antimalarial trials since 1966, and enrolled 22% of all patients in such studies worldwide. Additionally the Faculty is a pioneer research hub for HIV/AIDS vaccine trials, assessment of the efficacy of antiretroviral therapies, assessment of treatments for opportunistic infections, epidemiological surveys, and analyzing social risk factors. Research conducted at FTM covers core tropical diseases (such as malaria, dengue, melioidosis, helminthiases, chikungunya, and Japanese encephalitis and others) but also includes other health problems affecting Thai and Southeast Asian societies, such as obesity, allergies and diabetes. The Faculty conducts collaborative studies through both local and international linkages, and is currently affiliated with more than 20 leading research institutes across the globe. Indeed, the Faculty is the most productive at Mahidol University, with 279 publications in 2015 - an average rate of 2.7 publications per researcher per year. This strong combination of knowledge, facilities, networks, and proximity to the diseases in question makes the Faculty very well placed to conduct ground-breaking research. It is established as one of the major tropical medicine research hubs in Southeast Asia, with state-of-the-art facilities, a large pool of specialized researchers, several field laboratories in endemic areas, as well as a global network of collaborators from top institutions around the world. The Faculty was first established in 1960 with just five departments, but with increased specialization this number is now eleven. The Faculty of Tropical Medicine (FTM) has conducted high quality research for over half a century.
